I am the author of the memoir Culua: My Other Life in Mexico (2003), and the thriller The Bay of Shadows (2016), and have a background in journalism and linguistics. I'm fascinated by storytelling and all things language, especially Spanish and Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN), and have more than 10 years' experience in broadcast television and Deaf advocacy. People who have difficulty reading and writing suffer from shame, poor self-esteem and negative life experiences. They also lack access to many opportunities that most of us take for granted. ALNF exists to help these people by raising literacy levels in Australia’s most marginalised communities.
